Royal Polytechnic Institution was the first polytechnic institution in the UK. It is the antecedent institution of Westminster University. It was founded in 1838 and was granted public university status in 1992.
Fleming moved to London and got admitted to the Royal Polytechnic Institution. Prior to that, he used to be a student of Loudoun Moor School and Darvel School. He got a two-year scholarship to Kilmarnock Academy as well at that time.
