Lake Maggiore is a massive lake surrounded by some giant mountains. There is a statue in Isola Bella island in the bank of the lake.

Alexander Bell and his assistant Baldwin decided to travel the world from 1910 to 1911. During that tour, they met Enrico Forlanini, an Italian inventor in France. They got the opportunity to have some rides in the Forlanini hydrofoil boat over Lake Maggiore. Baldwin described those rides as smooth as flying. They developed some preliminary concepts as experimental models on returning to Baddeck. Dhonnas Beag, the first self-propelled Bell-Baldwin hydrofoil was the outcome of one of those concepts.
