The Black Castle is a neo-Gothic building that captivated Cézanne by its mysterious appearance. Beginning in 1887, Cézanne stored his material and the works in a small rented room of the castle. The mansion had been built in the 18th century by an industrialist from Marseilles who manufactured lampblack paint for interior decoration . Since then, the locals associated him with black magic and called his home the Black Castle.
