With Denis Papin, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz invented a steam engine. He even proposed a method for desalinating water. From 1680 to 1685, Leibniz struggled to overcome the chronic flooding that afflicted the ducal silver mines in the Harz Mountains, but did not succeed.
